Message from the Principal
This week we have a Flex Day scheduled for Wednesday. For this Flex Day we have asked staff to identify students that they would like to meet with to receive additional support, participate in extended activities, or complete an assessment. Students and parents will receive an email with the appointment times indicated. Additionally, there is a military fair that is open to all students that I hope many will visit. This past week we had our Fall Sports Awards. The turnout from the community was tremendous and it was great to see the auditorium filled. Thank you to Mike Desilets and Julie Guerrette for organizing the ceremony. Make sure you mark your calendars; the Bow High School Performing Arts Department Fall show, “Radium Girls” will take the stage on December 20th, 21st and 22nd!
Have a great week.

Alma
Here is a guide put together by our tech department to answer some commonly asked questions regarding Alma: Alma Guide
This year we have three sections of Woodworking. This is a class that is open to students in grades 9 - 12. Jon Cannon and Dave Niemaszyk are the instructors for this course and have spent a lot of time thinking about the skills they teach. Currently students are working on projects that benefit the entire school community. This week, students in Period 7 created a “mud kitchen” for the pre-K classes. Other students are working on a new bench that can be used by all students in the school. Already projects from this class are seen and being used throughout the building**. **

Message from the Principal
Thank you to family members and students who attended the Student Progress Conferences last week. Thank you too for everyone who played a part in our school meeting on Friday in which we honored veterans. Veterans Day is a time for us to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members and their families. There are a number of veterans in our communities of Bow and Dunbarton and all of us are in their debt for their selflessness in service to our nation. Below are the two videos that were shared at our school meeting:
I encourage you to take a moment to read President Reagan’s 1985 speech on Veterans Day in which he talks about the importance of this day for all Americans: Reagan Speech.
Lastly, here is a short video of us raising the POW / MIA flag for the first time over BHS: Flag Raising
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Have a great week.
Sports AwardsThe Fall Sports Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, November 13th, at 6:00. This is an opportunity to recognize our student-athletes and celebrate their athletic accomplishments. I hope you can join us.
Graduation
I know this is scary, but we have officially set the graduation date for the Class of 2025 for Friday, the 13th of June, at Saint Anselm College. Graduation will begin at 4:00. More information will go out around this and the many other senior events we have planned.

AP Honor Roll
This week we received notice that Bow High School was named to the AP Honor Roll. Of the nearly 80 eligible high schools in the state only 16 earned this distinction. Of the 16, less than half are public schools. Thank you to our dedicated staff and students.
In the ClassroomDid you know that Bow High School has two Pre-K classes? We are lucky that the youngest students in the school district attend our school. Samantha O’Donnell and the entire Pre-K team do an incredible job of welcoming their students into public school and then helping them develop skills so they will be successful. I am always impressed by what a great job the educators in the Pre-K room do in building structured routines. Recently, Pre-K students and the students in Graphic Design collaborated on creating “monsters”. Pre-K students described what their monster looked like and then the Graphic Design students created it on the computer. Activities like this are why, selfishly, I love going to visit with these young students.

Message from the Principal
I’d like to say congratulations and thank you to the student organizations who helped put on Trunk or Treat last Saturday, Peer Outreach and Tabitha Pauley for the Halloween fun, our athletic teams for their successful seasons (some still ongoing), Jill Armstrong and Student Senate for organizing the Mock Election, and The Taters for their hilarious improv show on Friday. I feel very lucky to be surrounded by such talented, fun, and caring students.
This Friday we will have our monthly school meeting. To accommodate our guest speaker, Maj. Gen. David J. Mikolaities, we will have a different schedule than previous meeting days. The schedule for the day can be found here: November 08, 2024
Part of our recognition of Veterans Day will include raising the POW / MIA flag. This flag was established by Congress and stated that it would be the symbol of our nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for. According to the US Department of Defense, more than 80,000 American service personnel are missing from previous conflicts and 38,000 are estimated to be recoverable. Our hope in raising this flag is to bring education and awareness of the sacrifices service members and their families have made over the history of the United States.
This week will also include an Early Release Day on Monday (schedule here: November 04, 2024) and no school on November 05 (make sure to vote!). Have a good week.

In the Classroom
This week, Mallory Niemaszyk’s Civics class had the opportunity to work with graphic novel author Marek Bennett (author of The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby). Mr. Bennett showed the students the process he goes through when researching a topic and how he uses primary sources to create his novels. Students are taking the lessons that they learned from Marek Bennett and are applying them to works they create based on the amendments of the US Constitution.

This week in Sophia Tucker’s Metalsmithing class students continued to work on designing and constructing earrings and other metal-based projects. Students began a recent class by going over a recent quiz where they were tasked with identifying different types of metals and tools that were used in the course. From there students worked on a variety of individual tasks ranging from finding images online to use as the basis for a design, to drawing their own design, to using metal to create their own, individualized pieces. It was a lot of fun watching the creative process play out in class.

Message from the Principal
I hope that everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend. Last Thursday BES students and staff had to come over to the high school. Afterwards we received this message from BES Principal Lori Krueger:
On behalf of everyone from BES we would like to thank the BHS staff for all their support and help today as we arrived at your school. The Kindergarten teachers shared that as they walked up to the main entrance of the school, high school students were playing rock, paper, scissors through the window of the second floor hallway with the kids… I know there were many more acts of kindness and support that were experienced by BES!
This week we have several events taking place including performances from our music ensembles, a visit from the National Guard and Civil Support Team, and a school meeting on Wednesday. Please reach out with any questions and have a great week.

This event is open to all students who are considering a career in STEM fields or have an interest in working with the New Hampshire National Guard. Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes to visit the teams stationed in front of the school.
The teams will be showcasing their unit’s transportation assets, which include a command vehicle, an operations trailer, a communications vehicle known as the Unified Command Suite (offering a wide range of secure communications capabilities), and an analytical laboratory system vehicle (equipped with comprehensive analysis tools for characterizing unknown hazards). Additionally, there will be several general-purpose vehicles and a remote-controlled robot designed to detect airborne chemicals. For a brief overview of the Army National Guard Civil Support Team, please refer to the following video: Army National Guard Civil Support Team 60 Second.
In the Classroom
Students in Mrs. Dow’s LINKS classes and Mrs. Chaffee’s AP Statistics classes worked together this week to complete an investigation called “Candy Grab”. LINKS students, over a couple of different trials, attempted to see how much candy they could pick up at one time. The AP Statistics students used that data to do statistical analysis and make predictions. It was really fun watching these groups of students working together to have fun and to learn.

Message from the Principal
Greetings from Bow High School. This week, on October 9th, we will have our first Flex Day of the year. Flex Days are utilized for a number of reasons. These days allow us to conduct standardized testing without impacting classes, provide opportunities for field trips, allow for enrichment activities, and provide time for students to work on projects and activities. Examples of things that students may choose to do include gaining career hours, completing community service hours, working on the college process, or getting ahead on school work.
These days also allow us the opportunity to schedule students time to meet with their teachers if they are in need of additional support or to make-up assessments. Students for whom this applies will receive an email from the school. Please reach out to me with any questions.
PSAT (10/9/24): Message from Kate Kulacz
Reminder for the upcoming mandatory PSAT testing for all juniors on Wednesday, October 9th from 7:45am to 11am. The test administration will begin promptly at 8am and late students will not be admitted due to Collegeboard digital testing protocols. Please take note of the following details: Students need to report to their assigned classroom no later than 7:45am.
- There will be signs and staff in the main lobby to help direct students to their assigned classroom.
- The official test is a total of 2 hours and 14 minutes and consists of 2 sections:
-
- Math and Reading/Writing Section
- All testing will take place in the 2200 wing.
- Every student must bring their school issued Chromebook for the test. The device needs to have a full charge, and be able to maintain that charge for a minimum of 3 hours in order to complete the test.
-
- Please note if you have any issues with your Chromebook put in a help ticket immediately so IT can make sure your Chromebook is working for the day of the exam.
- We recommend students bring a water bottle and small snack for the 10 minute break time.
****College Board Resources PSAT/NMSQT
Students can prepare for their assessment by downloading and taking a full-length adaptive practice test in Bluebook (bluebook.app.collegeboard.org), reviewing their results on My Practice (mypractice.collegeboard.org) by signing in with the same credentials provided by their school, and using Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy® (https://www.khanacademy.org/digital-sat).

News from the Nest: BHS September 29, 2024
Message from the Principal
Greetings from Bow High School. We had a very busy week last week with games, rehearsals, and events designed to help students think about their post-high school plans. A gigantic thank you goes out to Kate Kulacz and the School Counseling Department for organizing a College Fair as well as a Senior Night for parents. Having been through the college process with one son, and going through it again with another, I know there is a lot of information to process. I encourage students to make appointments with their counselors if they have questions or need assistance in planning for the future.
Interact Club Movie Night
The BHS Interact Club is hosting a movie night (watching “Rio”) on Friday, October 4th at 6:30pm on the lawn by the 1300 wing. There will be popcorn and water sold, but admission is free and open to anyone in the community!
Drivers Education
Getting a driver’s license is a really big deal for many high school students. We understand how important Drivers Education is and the challenge of finding hours to drive with an instructor. However, drive times should never be scheduled during class time as these absences will be considered unexcused. Thank you for supporting the importance of being in class.
Washington DC Trip
Bow High School is participating in a dynamic, hands-on, civic education program for juniors and seniors in Washington, DC this spring. As educators, we are always looking for new and interesting ways to provide extra challenges and opportunities to enhance the students’ educational experience. We strongly believe that Close Up does just that and will provide a learning experience of a lifetime!
With over 50 years of experience, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization; and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. While in Washington, DC, on Close Up, your student will have the opportunity to live and learn with peers from around the country while engaging in seminars with policymakers and explorations of historical sites and government offices.
This 6-day program prepares young citizens to meet the challenges of governing themselves and their nation through discussions of key domestic and international issues with members of Congress and their staff, Washington insiders, and other leading policy experts;
- Comprehensive study visits to the significant historical sites and cultural neighborhoods of our nation’s capital;
- Daily small-group workshops that encourage students to connect what they see in DC with what they are learning in the classroom back home; and
- Self-directed time with their teachers to explore the nation’s capital!**Applications are due no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday October 4th, 2024. Please email jarmstrong@bownet.org for more information. You may also visit www.CloseUp.org to learn more about the Close Up Program.

**Message Regarding Open Gym
Hi all, my name is Bryana Szepan, and I am a senior on the BHS girls' basketball team. I am contacting you about our open gyms, which run every Sunday morning from 10 to 11:15 a.m. If anyone is interested, you are welcome to participate. This is an excellent opportunity to get a basketball in your hands and meet other players before the start of the season. We hope to see you at our next open gym!
In the Classroom
This past week, in his filmmaking class, Sam Dixon and his class explored the use of montages in film. Students looked at how montages are used to allow a filmmaker to show the audience the passage of time in a condensed manner. One of the scenes that Mr. Dixon used to illustrate this point was the training montage from “Rocky IV”. In filmmaking students study different film techniques and then apply them to their own works. I am looking forward to seeing what the students in the class create***.***
