    News From the Nest: 1/12/25

    Message from the Principal

This is the last week of the First Semester. I am reminded of what a former colleague of mine said about school: “the days are long but the years are short”. To the Class of 2025, I encourage you to think about how you can continue to leave your impact on the school community throughout the remainder of this school year.

On Monday Brenda Barth and I met with Senior Class Officers to discuss end of the year events. In the coming weeks we will schedule a virtual meeting with parents of 12th grade students to go over these events and answer any questions. Please reach out to me any time if there are questions I can answer for you.

I hope you have a great week.

Career Fair on February 12, 2025

Students, on 2/12/25 we will be hosting a Career Fair at Bow High School from 11:00AM-1:00PM.  This is a great and easy way to earn career exploration hours (a graduation requirement!) and learn about some amazing careers.

You can choose what presentations you would like to attend from the list of speakers below.  Please remember that if you sign up, it is expected that you attend the full thirty minute presentation.  Bring your questions as each presentation will allow for Q and A time.  Feel free to go to a presentation every 30 minutes or just select one or two that you are curious about.

IMPORTANT - You need to sign up by 2/7/25 to attend.  If you do not sign up, you will not be able to attend.  Sign ups will not be taken after 2/7/25

Room numbers will be assigned once students have had a chance to sign up.  A list of presenters and their room numbers will be posted in the lobby on the day of the Career Fair.

Each room will have a sign-in sheet that students will need to sign.  It is also expected that students put their hours into SchooLinks by 2/19/25 in order to receive career exploration hours for attending this event.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact Maureen Ariel or your School Counselor.

    School Meeting on Wednesday

This past week at our school meeting we heard announcements from classes and organizations as well as Ty Gagne. You can check out his website here; I hope everyone was able to take away some things from his presentation.

We would love to be able to find other speakers or presentations that are of interest to students. Please let me know if you have any ideas or contacts. Thank you.

    Student IDs

For a number of reasons we live in a world where we will be asked for our IDs at various locations and times. At BHS, we ask students to carry their IDs for safety as students enter and exit the building. Please make sure you have your ID with you. Thank you.

    Senior Seminar Final Talks

Beginning on January 13th seniors in Senior Seminar will be giving their Final Talks in the BHS auditorium. I am excited to see the variety of projects students have been engaging in and all the great things they have accomplished.

    January 20th, 2025

All schools in SAU 67 will be closed on Monday, January 20th in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr Day. The 20th is also Inauguration Day. The Inauguration is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM and will be broadcast on a number of media platforms. If you would like to learn more about the history of Presidential Inaugurations you can check out this website: Presidential Inaugurations

    Auditions for Mean Girls

Auditions for the Spring production of “Mean Girls” will take place January 20th. There are QR codes on posters around the building to sign up for an audition time. This promises to be another excellent production!

    In the Classroom

This week students in America in the World Classes were visited by BHS math teacher Dr. Paul Cohen who gave his insights on the Vietnam War. Dr. Cohen is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a military historian. During his talk he discussed some of the decision making done by US military and political leaders, and spoke about the challenges that US Service Members faced while fighting in Southeast Asia. His talk connected to a unit of study on the Vietnam War the classes are doing. During this unit students are reading The Things They Carried, a classic memoir of war. Thank you Dr. Cohen for sharing your knowledge with our students.

    News from the Nest:1/5/25

    Message from the Principal

Congratulations to the members of the BHS VEX Robotics Team (3773) for another successful performance and hosting of the Bow Bot Bout. Also, congratulations to our Girl’s Basketball Team who won their holiday tournament in a thrilling game against Merrimack Valley.

As a teenager I swore I would never sound like my parents. But…. students, with the weather being cold outside please wear a coat and gloves to school. You never know when you may be stuck outside and it is helpful to be prepared.

First semester is coming to an end soon so I encourage students to make sure you know what assessments you have coming up and to end the semester strong. Have a great week and please be in touch if you need anything.

Families and Friends of BHS Students

Thank you to all of the adults in the school community who have come out to volunteer their time and talents for our students. I continue to be grateful for our families who volunteer at the Vex Robotics Competition, support the Booster Club and BHS Athletics by operating food or merchandise tables, selling baked goods and raising funds for the Performing Arts Department, or simply cheering on our students. We truly could not do the things we do without you. THANK YOU!!

    School Meeting on Wednesday

One of the things that we are doing this year is to have a monthly school meeting. These are times when our entire school community comes together in one place to hear announcements, participate in special programs, celebrate the accomplishments of peers, and build meaningful connections. We modify the schedule to allow for this meeting to take place by going from two lunches to one lunch. It is our expectation that students attend these meetings as it is during the academic day.

This month we are being visited by Ty Gagne who has a great message to share. You can check out his website here.

    Senior Seminar Final Talks

Beginning on January 13th seniors in Senior Seminar will be giving their Final Talks in the BHS auditorium. I am excited to see the variety of projects students have been engaging in and all the great things they have accomplished.

    Auditions for Mean Girls

Auditions for the Spring production of “Mean Girls” will take place the week of January 20th. This promises to be another excellent production!

    PTO Movie Night

PTO will host a Family Movie night in the BHS Auditorium on January 10.  We will be showing “The Wild Robot”.  Tickets are $5 each, and cash and Square payments will be available at the door.  Doors open at 6:00pm, with the movie beginning at 6:15pm.  Water and popcorn are included with your ticket purchase!  To sign up to help with this event, please click below.

    In the Classroom

Students in Meagan Burd’s “Literature and Culture” class finished reading Purple Hibiscus prior to Winter Break and are now preparing for their Socratic Seminar next week. The seminar is an opportunity for students to discuss the novel and make connections to the ideas of their classmates. Students also spent some time writing SMART goals for 2025; a great way to begin a new calendar year.

Literature and Culture is a course designed for Eleventh Grade students and introduces them to authors from around the world. Through engaging in literature students are able to get a glimpse into the lives of those who live in different places on the globe.

    News from the Nest: 12/29/24

    Message from the Principal

Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Radium Girls” for three terrific performances last week. I was so proud to see all of the work our students put into rehearsals come to fruition on the stage. Congratulations as well to our teams who competed in tournaments over the winter break. Our Indoor Track Girls Team placed first at their most recent meet and our Boys Team finished third. These events during winter break would not be possible without the support of our athletic department, led by Mike Desilets, and the coaches who give of their time to coach and support our student athletes. I am looking forward to the events coming up the rest of the season and hope to see many of you at our games

I am very excited for the Bow Bot Bout which will be taking place Saturday, the 4th, here at Bow High School. Teams from all over the state will be competing and if you have never been to a robotics competition before I encourage you to come and check it out!

As we begin a new calendar year, let's commit again to our goals for this year: lead by example, embrace challenges, and say hello to the people we meet on campus. I wish you all the best; Happy New Year!

    Senior Seminar Final Talks

Beginning on January 13th seniors in Senior Seminar will be giving their Final Talks in the BHS auditorium. I am excited to see the variety of projects students have been engaging in and all the great things they have accomplished.

Bow High School Musician heads to Prestigious Showcase

Junior Dominic Catalfimo recently auditioned for a prestigious music festival. We just received word that he was selected to participate in the 2025 National Association for Music Education Eastern Division Honors Ensembles Festival in Connecticut!! There were over 2000 applicants and he was one of only 13 musicians throughout the East Coast selected to perform for this music festival. Dominic will not just be representing Bow High School but will be proudly representing the state of New Hampshire! Congratulations Dom!

    Auditions for Mean Girls

Auditions for the Spring production of “Mean Girls” will take place the week of January 20th. This promises to be another excellent production!

    Bow Bot Bout 2025

The opening ceremony starts at 9:00 am, with qualifying matches starting shortly thereafter and running through about 3:30, at which time alliance selection and elimination matches will begin.  The action will be livestreamed at live.bowbots.org.

    In the Classroom

In the week prior to Winter Break students in the Peer-to-Peer program worked together to create a festive holiday celebration for each other and staff from around the building. This class guides students in the development of independent life skills and it uses a peer coaching model approach to learning. Students with intellectual/developmental disabilities are paired with peer support partners. In addition to organizing fun events such as the holiday celebration, this class also focuses on simple housekeeping, pre-vocational skills, meal prep, clean up, social participation skills and lifetime leisure activities. I really appreciate that we have a student body that values this type of inclusivity.

    Message from the Principal

Hi Everyone. This past week we held our traditional Poetry Out Loud contest. Congratulations to Aleks Graham-Binder, Anne-Marie Fay, Jaden Glace, and all the contestants. The outside judges both said that the group of students who shared a poem was the best group they have ever judged here at Bow High School. Congratulations also go out to our Performing Arts Department for another excellent concert this past Thursday.

A number of our winter teams have had their first contests of the year and are participating in tournaments over the next couple of weeks. Good luck Falcons!

As we head into Winter Break I hope that the new year is one filled with happiness and joy for everyone who is a part of our school community.

Survey on Middle School Athletic Fee

The School Board has asked that we gather information on whether the community would support an athletic fee for Bow Memorial School similar to what is done at Bow High School. Please take a moment to complete this survey: BMS Athletic Fee Survey

    Flex Day on Wednesday

This Wednesday is our next Flex Day. Students and families should get a message inviting them to their appointments either Monday or Tuesday. If a student receives this message it is very important that they plan on attending so that they can work with their teachers prior to the winter break.

For all students, our School Counseling Department is putting on a series of fun activities that will take place in the lobby and gym from 12:00 - 2:00. I hope to see many of our students participating in the fun with their friends and classmates.

    Police Training Exercise

The Bow Police Department will be conducting a training exercise at BHS on Monday, December 23rd (during Winter Break). If you see police activity at the school there is nothing to worry about.

    In the Classroom

This week students in Ben Forbes’ and Sean Doherty’s BEST 10 classes had the opportunity to participate in a distracted driver exercise put on by the New Hampshire Army National Guard. One of the Guardsmen who came in had previously served in the New Hampshire State police and he spoke to the students about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. During the class period students completed an obstacle course on a go-cart. The first time students did the course they had no distractions and the second time they wore googles that simulated being impaired. Students experienced how their reflexes and ability to maneuver were impacted. Thank you to all of our BEST teachers for helping our students learn important skills and knowledge to make healthy decisions.

    News from the Next: 12/08/24

    Message from the Principal

It really feels like winter is here now with the change in weather and all the activity taking place in the building. From rehearsals, to academic pursuits, to our teams practicing and competing, the building is hopping from 7:00 AM into the evening. I am excited to see many of you at the events we have coming up in the next two weeks.

On Tuesday (at 9:50 AM) we are going to conduct a lockdown tabletop exercise. I will be going over the intercom and reading a scenario and students and staff will discuss how they would respond to each step of the scenario. We are starting with this drill as a way to get the school community thinking about what they would do in the event of an emergency. Later in the year we will do a physical lockdown drill.

There have been articles published about lockdown drills and the emotional impact they can have on students and staff. For that reason, starting with a drill that is discussion based, we will be able to be prepared for an emergency while not causing undue distress. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Poetry Out Loud / School Meeting

On Wednesday we will have our next monthly school meeting. During this meeting our annual Poetry Out Loud competition will take place, there will be musical performances, and a few updates from the different classes. A BIG thank you goes out to Joy Dustin for organizing the Poetry Out Loud Competition and Alicia Rockenhauser for working with her students to provide music. As in past years, WMUR’s Sean McDonough will be the emcee for Poetry Out Loud.

    BHS Performing Arts

The BHS Music Department will have their winter concert this Thursday and the Taters, our hilarious improv group, have a show on Friday. Next week is the premier of “Radium Girls”.

St. Paul’s Advanced Summer Program (sophomores and juniors)

A representative from the Advanced Studies Program (ASP) at St. Pauls will be at Bow High School on Tuesday, December 10th at 8am in the BHS Chorus Room to meet with students who might be interested in applying for the 2025 ASP program. This program is for current juniors and sophomores (and there is no application fee). All students who are interested in this opportunity are encouraged to attend the information session.

    LinkedIn

One of the goals we had for this year was to try to connect more of our alumni to the school. As we look for ways to increase experiential and service learning opportunities for our students, connecting to past Falcons is a great way to do this. To help in this effort there is an updated Bow High School account on LinkedIn. Give it a follow and help us grow our connections.

    Citrus Fundraiser

The Class of 2025 would like to let you all know that the Class of 2025 Citrus Sale Fundraiser is officially live and accepting orders. Here is the link if you would like to order any citrus or other goodies and help support the Class of 2025's fundraising efforts. Orders close on December 16th.

    In the Classroom

Students in their “America in the World” classes have begun preparing for the World’s Fair. The World’s Fair is a much anticipated tradition at Bow High School and this year it will take place on Friday, February 7th. Students in their classes are assigned a country and then work on learning about the culture, history, and people of that country. One of the neat things about this project is the amount of skills students develop during the process. Students develop research skills, writing skills, analytical skills (analyzing maps, data, charts), and presentation skills. This project is a huge undertaking and kudos go to the America in the World teachers who provide this opportunity for their students (Mrs. Niemaszyk, Ms. Armstrong, Mr. DeAngelis, Ms. Barnea, Mr. Watson, and Ms Aubin).

    Message from the Principal

I hope this message finds everyone well-rested after the Thanksgiving break. This week our Winter Sports Season has its first contests of the year and all teams are now practicing and preparing to compete. Our music department is getting ready for their next concert and the cast and crew of “Radium Girls” remain hard at work getting ready for opening night.

We have a very busy three-week stretch before the Winter Break. Please reach out with any questions or things I can help with. Have a great week.

    Bow Bots

Good luck to the Bow Bot Team who are heading to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to compete in the Regionals this week. We can’t wait to hear how they do!

    Music All-State

The following students were accepted to this year's NHMEA Classical All State festival:

Emily Fauteux, alto voice, mixed choir

    Colin FitzPatrick, clarinet, band

Katie McCabe, soprano voice, treble choir

Molly McKinnon, soprano voice, treble choir

Please congratulate them if you see them. This is a great accomplishment, and they will represent our school at the festival in April.

This week I would like to talk about something fun from outside of the classroom. Over the past week a group of BHS students and staff have been touring France. They have checked out sites of both cultural and historical significance to the French people. One of the first places the group visited was the American cemetery in Normandy. I can only imagine what a powerful experience it must have been for our group to be there. Traveling to other places is one of the best ways to develop empathy and understanding of other people and I am excited to hear about all the things the group learned when I see them next week.

News from the Nest: BHS November 24

    Message from the Principal

Good Afternoon. I am writing this message from a hotel room in Philadelphia as I am getting ready to run the Philadelphia Marathon tomorrow. I thought I had better be safe and send this out today just to make sure it got out in case tomorrow is a struggle.

This week we only have classes on Monday and Tuesday. I hope that everyone in our school community is able to enjoy a little time off with the Thanksgiving holiday. Personally, I am thankful to be able to work with such a great staff at BHS and to interact every day with our students. Thank you to everyone in the community for the strong support you give our schools.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

    Some Special Thank-yous

Thank you to everyone who organized and volunteered at the craft fair this weekend. If you ever need evidence that our community cares about its students, all you need to do is look at all the work that went into making this event take place.

Also, thank you to Kate Kulacz, Nicole Heath, Emily Rider, Dan Attori, and Martha Rae for all they did to run Apply NH on Monday and the Military Fair on Wednesday. This is a very busy stretch for our school counselors who are helping students plan for after high school, writing recommendations, and supporting our students. We have the best School Counseling Staff in any school!

    Blackhawk Helicopter

Thank you to Connor Parzik for capturing video of the US Army’s Blackhawk taking off and touching down at Bow High School Wednesday during the Military Fair. Check out the video: Blackhawk

    In the Classroom

One of the unique ways we support students at Bow High School is through our Learning Lab. The Learning Lab is run by Cathy Knowles who works with students on completing class assignments, strengthening Executive Functioning Skills, and fostering academic independence. Students who attend Learning Lab sit with Ms. Knowles, or an on-duty member of the teaching staff, to review assignments they have to complete and identify specific areas that they need to develop. Ms. Knowles and the teachers who have duty in the Learning Lab to a terrific job of supporting our students.

Students and parents will receive an email with the appointment times indicated. Additionally, there is a military fair that is open to all students that I hope many will visit. This past week we had our Fall Sports Awards. The turnout from the community was tremendous and it was great to see the auditorium filled. Thank you to Mike Desilets and Julie Guerrette for organizing the ceremony. Make sure you mark your calendars; the Bow High School Performing Arts Department Fall show, “Radium Girls” will take the stage on December 20th, 21st and 22nd!

    In the Classroom

This year we have three sections of Woodworking. This is a class that is open to students in grades 9 - 12. Jon Cannon and Dave Niemaszyk are the instructors for this course and have spent a lot of time thinking about the skills they teach. Currently students are working on projects that benefit the entire school community. This week, students in Period 7 created a “mud kitchen” for the pre-K classes. Other students are working on a new bench that can be used by all students in the school. Already projects from this class are seen and being used throughout the building**. **
